Alaska Woman Acquitted for Murdering Her Husband

After three days of domestic violence, an Alaska wife shot her husband while he slept six times. Killing him was an act of protection as she was held against her will and tortured over that period of three days by the man who claimed to love her. This woman was arrested and charged with second degree murder, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide for her actions on October 7, 2010. Just this Tuesday, she was found not guilty on all charges by the jury after they spent many days working through the case after a four week long trial.

Using a .45 caliber gun, the wife first shot her husband in the head once and then followed with five shots to his back as he slept that night. She then called the police immediately to report the shooting. Her attorneys spent weeks arguing with the court that the murder was an act of self-defense as she was repeatedly raped and tortured by her husband over a three day period, holding her against her will in a storage cabin 40 miles outside of town.

While the prosecution attempted to prove that there were no signs of torture, the defense representing the wife brought forward documents that claimed her and her husband (who had been married since 1995) were having marriage problems back in 2006 that resulted in her filing for a restraining order from her husband. There were also documents filed by her doctors that proved her injuries from her husband. According to the wife's testimony, the restraining order was a result of her telling her husband she wanted a divorce; he got angry and attacked her.

Fortunately for her, with the help of a strong defense attorney, they were able to prove that her actions were justified and now she has the opportunity to be reconciled to her children after close to two years behind bars while the trial was pending.
